Why I can say I have fans and get away with it… almost

A tweet about me

Ok, so there’s some debate about whether or not anyone should ever say they have fans until they’re a big time celebrity.  And I get it.  I see people say on YouTube or in their blogs say they have fans and it often makes me cringe at how egotistical it sounds.

But what would you call someone who watches all of your videos, favorites them and comments on them saying how much they like you, comes to all of your live BlogTV shows, tells all of their friends about you (who then add you on Facebook and tell you so), shares your videos on Facebook and Twitter, and gets excited when you acknowledge them?  There are people who “can’t believe” Josh Rimer watched their video and commented on it.  I have people sending me gifts in the mail, offering to help me out with anything I might need, etc.   If I can’t call those people fans then I don’t know what a fan would be!

What do you think? At what point is it ok to say you have fans?  Or should it just never be said unless you’re living in Hollywood and getting over a million bucks for your next gig?

You don’t have to be famous to have fans!! Little kids on sport teams have fans, people @ the local theatre have fans, those taking dance, singing, music, and karate classes have fans. They are called family and friends!! I didn’t know about you until you got a particular shoutout from a particular YTuber. Watching your videos made me a fan. Chatting w you online during ur live show made me a friend.. I hope!

  2. Dustin Hertel

Yeah, I’d say you have fans. Hard to believe that’s the same guy who I once saw tagging along with Andy to the comedy club, and sitting all nice and quiet in the back, barely saying a word to anybody… I always had you pegged as the reserved type. Boy did you ever show me, lol.

  3. Josh Rimer

Cool, thanks for your comments you two! You’ve got a good point Christine - I suppose anyone who supports us can be considered a fan. And Dustin, you’re not the only one to think it weird that I’m quiet and reserved when they first meet me only to find another side of me online. lol

Pretty much everyone who’s putting something out on the internet has atleast some fans. But saying “Yeah, I have fans” sounds pretty arrogant most of the time. Saying “I have a few fans” or “I have some fans” works better imo.

Call them friends! It’s more personal.

  6. frenchie

it depends on how you say it. if you’re being egotistcal about it saying you have fans, then you shouldn’t be saying it. but josh, you have dedicated people who are subbed to you, watch and comment your vids, and come to your blog shows religiously. so. you can say you have fans :) but we’re like friends!!!!!! so, you should say you have fan-friends.

Frenchie totally stole my words!! yes we are fan friends! We are pretty hard core about you Josh, you need to sell a shirt!!!!!

Got an opinion?
