Get your videos shared!

At some point I’m sure you’ve had a friend send you a link to a video posted on YouTube and you opened it, liked what you saw, and shared it with your friends too (because you figured they’d like it too – after all, they’re usually your friends because they like the same kinds of things you do).

The accessibility and the growing appeal of online videos have certainly changed the way people get their daily entertainment and info fix. And of course, if you’re making videos on YouTube and wanting to get more people to share yours around with their friends, then you need to be strategic on what you’re uploading and know some of the facts and stats.

Here are few things that are important to know/realize:

- In terms of content, most viewers prefer videos that are funny and entertaining. This may seem obvious, but take a look through your videos and ask yourself if they’ve all fallen under either of those categories.  I see many people just blab away on camera and when their videos fail to get even a hundred views, I wonder if they consider that no one shares around a boring video.

-Simple home videos (remember the “Charlie Bit Me” video?)—those that appear ordinary—are more likely to go viral than video clips from movies or ad campaigns. So if you’ve got a business aspect to your videos or you’re trying to get attention for your company or products, keep in mind that the best way to do it is usually very subtly and without coming across at all as a sales pitch.

- Social networking sites the likes of Facebook give the popularity of online videos a push, given that a huge percentage of web users share online videos that way.  So make sure you’re sharing your videos on other social media platforms and encouraging the same from your viewers.

So, keep it fun, keep it simple, and keep it spreading – and remember those three things for every video that you upload!  And who knows, maybe the next video you see someone sharing will be your own!
