November 2007

Hope everyone in Alberta is enjoying the snow and cold weather. It was a nice sunny day here in Vancouver today. Teehee.

Here's what happened in November:

- Acted in 2 student projects. In the first one I ended up having to make out with 3 different girls. Needless to say, that was quite interesting to shoot and I can't wait to see how it looked! The second project was actually shot on film, which is really rare, so I'm excited to see how it turned out too. I played a bit of an awkward guy who's a little bit of a stalker. I met some really cool people on that one. And there was a third project that I got offered, but unfortunately at the last minute I had to turn it down due to the incredible unprofessionalism and ignorance of the producer. I've also cancelled a few auditions. One thing I'm finding here is that although there are a ton of indie and student projects going on , many of them are being done by people who are quite clueless, especially when it comes to dealing with actors. Some of the auditions I've gone on or been invited to have been just ridiculous!
- Acted for 5 local casting directors: I went to a weekend workshop where I got coached by three amazing actors/teachers and then got to show off my stuff for some casting directors. I got some really good feedback and I'm learning more about my strengths and areas that need to be worked on. I really want to take some more coaching, but the classes are really expensive so gotta get my finances in check first!
- Got new headshots : I love my new pic. Much better than the ones I was using before and should make a difference with the auditions I get. I'll include it at the end of this email.
- YouTube.ca honors: A Canadian version of YouTube has launched and my thousand dollar experiment is the #1 most discussed video of all time in Canada. I added around 15 new videos this month as I decided to make one for every category on YouTube. Some of them got quite high up in the daily rankings, often making it to #1 or #2 most viewed or discussed of the day in their category in Canada.
- Edited a bunch of wedding videos: This has been my main time consumer this month. My brother ended up getting a full time job where he's working 6 days a week, so I took over doing all the editing from this past summer's wedding videos. That's kept me very busy and as you can probably imagine, I've seen just about all the blushing brides I can handle in one month!

News on what's coming up:

- I'm heading back to Calgary for the first two weeks of December to do a school residency. I'll be at an elementary school where each class is shooting a short movie and they'll all be shown at the Christmas concert as a big film premiere instead of the standard live student show. It's going to be a crazy race to get it all done in the short amount of time that we have, but I'm sure it'll be a lot of fun. It'll also be Hanukkah so I'll be able to spend it with my extended family. I'm not looking forward to heading back to the snow though!
- Getting an agent is one of my main priorities when I return to Vancouver. It's really hard to get a good one here and I've been holding off until I can put together a better demo reel. So, that's next on my list of things to do. I'm hoping to get a copy of one of the makeout scenes soon so I can hopefully add one of them!
- I'll be doing some editing for a client who's getting some web/promotions videos done with footage that I shot last month, so that's what I'll be working doing for work when I get back from Calgary.
- My brother Andy & I have finally set some deadlines for ourselves to get the editing done for the sketch comedy skits that we shot this summer, so I'll be starting on those as well next month. They'll be a lot more fun than the other stuff I've been editing I'm sure!
- I'll actually be heading back to Calgary a second time at the end of December to MC my friend's wedding. That'll be a pretty quick trip, but I'm really looking forward to it. I of course talked her into getting it videotaped so I'll have yet another wedding to edit... but it shouldn't be as painful to go through as some of the past ones!
- I'm going to be in Avenue Magazine! I got an email from the editor saying that they're going to write about me and show my photo in their Year in Review edition because of The $1000 YouTube Experiment. I sure got my money's worth out of that publicity stunt!

And I think that about covers it. I'm still totally in love with Vancouver and so happy to be here. I just got a new bike so I'm going to join in with most people here and start limiting my car use. I also joined a gym and I'm even cooking at home once in a while - gasp! I gotta say I love the Asian supermarket near me - so many cool and yummy things there... and if you know me, you know the weirder a food is, the more I like it.

Until next time, thanks for reading and stay warm!
