How to not make your YouTube business videos suck

written by JoshRimer.com on February 13th, 2012

There are some great videos for businesses and brands on YouTube. But maybe more often than not, there are some really bad ones.  ReelSEO put together a list of some doozies to help highlight just what is is that can make a promotional video so cringingly bad on YouTube.

Here are four quick tips on how not get your videos on a “you suck” list:

1. Don’t make a video where you appear to be insincere about your message.

Two words: Rick Perry.  He’s not fooling anyone.

2. Test videos on your friends before sending it out to the world at large.

Make sure you only upload videos that you and your friends would want to watch and share.

3. Stick to what you know best.

Creativity is key in making videos but don’t go over the top when it’s not needed. Make sure you can pull off your performance if you’re going to do one. Don’t be like this political candidate from Virginia.

4. Write a script.

You need to stay on target and avoid rambling.  You need to keep the video interesting and entertaining or educational.  You need to ensure you’re getting to the point quickly and moving along at a good pace.  All of this is hard to do without a script or at least a solid outline to guide yourself through the video.

Now get out there and make some videos for yourself or your business that don’t suck! Be sincere, utilize (and stay within) your talents/skills, write out what you’re going to say/do, and show it to a couple people you trust before making it public on YouTube.  Follow those steps, and you’ll be sure to stay off of any future “bad” list for YouTube videos. ;-)

You are so right! There are way too many bad business videos out there! I believe that especially your point about making a script is important. Without a script it is really hard to make a good video – and most people making youtube videos do not make scripts.

I am trying to use your tips when making my own youtube videos.

I think youtube videos just take time for a company to get used to. I was petrified at first of making videos our customers would see, but with time I got used to it. Those first video’s where atrocious mostly because I was timid and it came across that way. Thanks for the great post.
